Hello there, having been introduced as a guest to you Coalport water last October I took the first opportunity to join and enjoy the benefits of one of the most beautiful stretches of the Severn that I've ever fished.
ReplyDeleteSadly I've seen neither hide nor hair of your famous head of barbel in the first few months of trying, but I have to admit that I struggle to catch them in the summer, let alone the winter months.
My abiding impression so far is the high esteem in which this water is regarded by other anglers that I talk to-not one seems to have a bad word to say about it. More importantly is the helpful friendly nature of the other members that I've encountered so far, either on the bank or in the pub. The word 'Coalport' only has to come up in conversation and immediately it shifts into overdrive. In an instant I'm saturated with advice about pegs to fish, tactics to use, killer baits and other tips. I find this particularly refreshing given that so often people can be quite secretive about such matters in case the 'secret' gets out.
I love the place and I've enjoyed the company of people I've met so far. I'm far too long in the tooth to be wishing my life away, but I readily admit that I can't wait for the new coarse season and a summer spent exploring this magic three miles of pristine water. I look forward to meeting you there.
Hi there fellow blogger .At last the word is getting out there im glad you signed up . I am also very glad you are enjoying the river. I have to say i havnt personally been fishing for quite some time but i am happy running the website and setting up blogs like this for the benefit of the members. Im not suprised you are finding the members helpful and full of advice because thats what the club has always been about. Im quite sure you will have great days on the stretch of river but there are days when it can be dire like anywhere you fish, but i can assure you when you have a good day there, you soon forget the not so good ones. hello to all ,ive been fishing the 2 mile stretch now for about 7 yrs ive found the that consistant fishing and knowledge picked up from longer standing members has been benificial in my catch rate ,ive found that 15 seconds on the bridge before driving down the track can always help by studying the colour level and flow of the river and of coarse temp ,on doing this it can help you decide what sort of area,s of the river to go to ,we must note a river is not like a comercial where you can turn up and fish directley infront of a few hundred lb of fish , with a river study and understanding can help , now this blog is running i will post as much information as i can about catches blanks and mishaps :) tight lines all brian

The more information we can gather about members fishing exploits on our Rowley water the better we will all be informed as to how things are progressing or not as the case may be. Members opinions, moans or praise on their experiences while fishing our water can be looked at more quickly by the committee and if need be any action taken. More contact between members is always a good thing.

hi folks ,whent to the river today being thurs 23rd feb ,the river was maybe a 18 inches on when i got there ,at the last count 4 fish where taken from around the 60,s area 2 barbel 2 chub ,inbetween the meadow pegs 89 produced 2 fish being 1 barbel 1 chub for the day for a member ,87 was fished i dont think it produced anything ,i was in peg 90 and duly recieved my blankety blank cheque book and pen :) the top end of the meadow produced 1 barbel for the day for 2 anglers in pegs 101 and 102 ,on the river conditions even though it was a awarm day the water was really cold ,also it was rising, and to top it all off there was a diesal spill in the river at ironbridge which gave an unpleasant smell wafting round your nose all afternoon ,i think all fish caught where on pellet ,my two rods one on pellet and one on meat didnt budge for the entire session ,hopefully river will be in better condition for sundays match :)

peg 10 was fished for the last 2 hrs and didnt produce a bit
peg 61 and another peg close by was fished where at my last information 7 fish where taken mostley barbel
peg 74 was fished with 2 fish being taken
peg 87 produced 7 fish
a peg close by 87 not shure of the peg produced 4 fish
the water was still cold but in the right pegs the fish are still feeding .
as far as i am aware most of the fish came off pellet

ReplyDeletemuch better afternoon today ,was a cold day with hail and rain showers ,as far as im aware i was the only one down there today so here goes ,i fished peg 61 today as i was on course for my third blank :) on form it has been a good peg the last few weeks ,so i started my session fishing a big open end feeder filled with wet pellet and two 8 mm hair rigged on a three ft hook lengh ,after an hr and a half of searching the far bank and fishing middle river i was unable to find any feeding fish .
i resighned my self to another blank for the day and put the feeder tight down the inside close to the over hanging bush ,halfway into pouring my mug of tea the rod wrenched round my first barbel about 4lb,
this was followed by 6 more fish inbetween 4 and 6lb ,the last fish was taken about 3 ish as quick as i caught all the fish in succesion the bites dissapeared ,the next three hrs i couldnt pick a bite up anywhere ,then at 6 the dinner bell rung again as out the same swim tight on the inside i produced 2 bigger fish 8 and 8.5 lb and a small chub in a 20 minuite spell tight lines to all only a few days left of the season hope you have good ones :)
My last foray to Coalport was on 3rd March 2012.I fished a peg up in the 90's and started about 8am. Had my first fish at 8:20 (6lb 5oz barbel) then another one about 8:50 (7lb 2oz barbel) then that was it. No more bites between then and when I packed up at 12:30. It was a very overcast day at first and both fish were taken early on whilst it was still dull and wet. The weather perked up considerably after that and I'm wondering if the bright sunshine put the fish down a bit. Having said that a chap above me had an excellent bag of chub and a few barbel, and he caught fish throughout most of the morning.Its just nice to catch something, so I shan't grumble.

ReplyDeleteThe river was 6inches up and slightly coloured.
John Smith fishing peg 61
John started on the meat and straight lead fish right over with 6lb main line and 5.5lb hook length. From here he caught 3 Chub and 2 Barbel. John then changed to a 3 swan waggler fishing down the middle where he caught 10 Chub, 3 Barbel and 2 Sea Trout. He had all 15 fish on double red maggot. John's biggest Barbel was between 6 to 7lbs, all 13 Chub were about 2.5lbs each and the 2 sea trout about 1.5lbs each
John was well satisfied with his days fishing.
Birthday boy Roger Bowen fishing peg 87, it's Rogers favorite peg.
Roger fished 10lb main line and 8lb hook length, feeder fishing maggot and casting short of the sunken tree out in front and slightly down
Roger caught 5 Barbel but lost 2 other fish. His biggest fish was about 8.5lbs

ReplyDelete8 anglers fished a small match on the pool on Sunday 25/3/12, it was won by Keith Bonas fishing peg 9 who had 22 Chub for 8lbs 5ozs. Second was John Smith fishing peg 11 who had 18 Chub for 7lbs 7ozs and third was Roy Woodhouse fishing peg 8 who had 15 Chub for 5lbs 6ozs. These fish were all weighing in at around 6 to 7 ounces. They were stocked in February 2009 as 2/3 inch fingerlings and have started to show well on the pool. These fish will continue to grow and should provide some good sport in the near future. There are also some larger Chub in the pool that weigh in at 2 to 2.5lbs. Lets hope this improvement continues.
Results for the Latest Pheasant Pool match on 8/4/12
ReplyDeleteConditions for the 12 anglers who fished the match were a bit rough with rain and cold water.
1st was Graham Parkes fishing peg 9 who had 19 Chub for 7lbs 6ozs.
2nd was Dave Hubball fishing peg 22 who had 1 Bream & 1 Chub for 3lbs 3ozs.
3rd was Roy Woodhouse fishing peg 18 who had 6 Chub for 3lbs 1oz.
35 Chub were caught in total for 19lbs 12ozs (averaging 9ozs each)
Results for the match held on Pheasant Pool on 20/5/12

1st was J Smith fishing peg 13, he had 13 Chub, 3 Bream and
6 Roach for 13lbs 13ozs.
2nd was S Waite fishing peg 8, he had 11 Chub, 2 of these were around 2.5lbs each for 9lbs 9ozs.
3rd was R Woodhouse fishing peg 23, he had 8 Chub for 3lbs 12ozs.
The pool has been re-pegged and now has 25 pegs.

ReplyDeleteOnly been a member since last September, had some good days and some blanks.Have pleasure fished the pool with peg 10 producing some nice bream up to 6lb.Would like to ask any member that has a good knowledge of the river if there is any good sport to be had on the float.The pegs i have fished/experienced only look good for the feeder.Thanks

I agree Richie a bit of info is always a good thing to have, however as we all know the river changes on a daily sometimes hourly basis, what works on Sunday morning may not even get a knock on Monday, its like evrything the more time and effort put in will reap rewards, but unfortunately myself and probably half the other members dont have enough available fishing time to do the research, thats why an active blog with info is so useful.

DeleteI think I already know the answer to this, but has the club ever provided a "round the year guide" to the best spots to fish and under which conditions? I'm doing my best to find out about them all by personally fishing them, but 105 pegs over two and a bit miles is proving quite a task. Surely there is at least one wise old Sage with a lifetime's knowledge waiting to be shared. We could have the guide ghost-written by Pat Murphy or Kingsley Amis (scrub that one, he died in 1995)and bound in vellum...it could become the "Mappa Mundi" of Ironbridge and all new members would be bound to swear an oath of alleigance over itincluding a solemn promise to respect the environment and property they will share with other members......Sorry, have I gone off on one there? Anyway I was just musing....
Hello there, just a brief word of thanks to the people who have taken the time and effort to install the peg number boards on the access road. As a newcomer to the club it has proved to be quite a time saver in terms of getting to the area that I intended to fish and not winding up hundreds of yards away.
ReplyDeleteIts also sad to see that one of them has been vandalised. Given the enthusiasm and kindness I've encountered from other members since joining I find it hard to believe that another member would deface club property in such a mindless fashion. Its so isolated there that I wonder if the damage hasn't been caused by some chancer who has decided to have a day's buckshee fishing, then has scrawled on the signpost safe in the knowledge that he (or she) isn't likely to return. I hope thats what it is anyway.
There's an old english word used to describe these morons. It begins with a "W", can't remember the rest.....answers on a postcard please.
Totally agree, I dont suppose for one minute the idiots would volunteer to to do some work on the pegs and access paths for everyones benefit, yet they expect it done for them, then deface club signs when its not to their liking, my response to them as a member is...if you dont like it, PLEASE dont join again next year, give your place up to a member with a brain.
DeleteOn a more fishing related note, I have enjoyed some good barbel fishing so far this year, but has anyone caught good size roach , bream, perch?, I fancy a day on the float trying for some decent fish, but dont want to waste my precious time, as if I blank, I would be thinking I could be into a nice barbel instead!!

ReplyDeleteThe river was 10 inches up and clear although a slight colour came in later in the match. The water temperature was 19.2C
1st L Asbury Peg 42 32lbs 12ozs
Assa fished plain Luncheon Meat on the float down the middle and caught at the bottom of the swim. He had 1 Barbel, 10 Chub and 1 Bream, catching steadily throughout the match. He also lost a total of 5 fish.
2nd S Jackson Peg 21 31lbs 4ozs
Steve fished the far bank in front of him with a block end feeder using pellet and corn. He caught 6 Barbel and 1 Chub and lost 2 others. Steve also dropped a big Chub back into the water while weighing in so could have won the match.
3rd T Smith Peg 69 27lbs
No report as Trevor went before we could get the information.
4th W Boden Peg 23 19lbs 2ozs
Wayne fished the middle with a block end feeder using white maggots and hair rigged pellet. He caught 5 Barbel at roughly 1 every hour, he also lost 2 other fish.
The amount of information contained in these reports is down to the individual angler to provide. The information provided by some is very limited hence the lack of detail.

ReplyDeleteI fished peg 22 on the 18 th of aug the river was perfect but the fishing.was far from that I tried everything and tried everywhere but after 6hrs ended up with one small chub so even in a peg usually full of fish it doesn't always mean you will catch them ""enjoy the good days lads " ha ha

1st M Tarr Peg 22A 36lbs 3ozs
Mick fished the middle at 1 o’clock. He fished 10lb reel line and 8lb hook length using a Blockend feeder with casters and 8mm pellet. Mick caught 7 Barbel, 1 Chub and 6 Dace. He had 2 of his Barbel in the first hour, 1 in the 3rd hr, 3 in the 4th hr. and 1 in the last hr. and didn’t loose any fish.
2nd T Newey Peg 63 35lbs 0oz 8drms
Trevor fished the near side at 3 o’clock a quarter down the swim. He fished 10lb reel line and 8lb hook length using a Blockend feeder with casters and spicy banded pellets. Trevor had 8 Barbel, 1 Chub and 1 Dace; he also lost 3 other fish.
3rd B Burley Peg 79 26lbs 1oz
Bryan fished the far bank at 1 o’clock. In the first hour he fished quarter down the swim for the first hour then moved to half way down for the 2nd & 3rd hours and moved again to three quarters down for the last 2 hours. He fished 8lb reel line and 6lb hook length using a Blockend feeder feeding 3mm Halibut pellets with 8mm for hook bait. Bryan had 7 Barbel, 1 in the 1st hr, 2 in the 2nd hr, 2 in the 4th hr. and 2 in the last hr. He also lost 4 other fish.
4th D Richardson Peg 50 24lbs 4ozs
Dave fished the middle using 8lb reel line and 6lb hook length with a Blockend feeder and 10mm Halibut pellet. Dave had 5 Barbel having 2 fish in the 1st hr, 3 in the 3rd hr. and 1 in the 5th hr. He also lost 1 other fish.

Ken fished the far bank at 1 & 2 o’clock a quarter down the swim. He fished 8lb reel line and 7lb hook length with a Blockend feeder and 8mm hair rigged Halibut pellet. Ken had 4 Barbel and
1 Perch, all of his fish coming in the first 3 hrs without loosing any.

Shaun fished the far bank at 1 o’clock a quarter down the swim. He fished 8lb reel line and 6lb hook length with a Blockend feeder with casters and 8mm Ston Fo and hair rigged Halibut pellets. Shaun had 3 Barbel, 1 Chub and 1 Bream all coming in the 2nd hr. of the match, he also lost 1 other fish.
3rd R Woodhouse Peg 74 19lbs 11ozs
Roy fished the far bank at 12 and 1 o’clock. He fished 10lb reel line and 8lb hook length with a Blockend feeder using hair rigged Luncheon meat and 8 &14mm Halibut pellets. Roy had 3 Barbel and 1 Chub, 3 coming in the first 2 hrs. and one in the last hr. He also lost 1 other fish.
4th T Newey Peg 79 15lbs 14ozs
Trevor fished the near side at 2 o’clock. He fished 12lb reel line and 10lb hook length with a Cage feeder using 8 & 10mm hair rigged Halibut pellets. Trevor had 3 Barbel and 1 Chub.

Andy fished the far bank at 2 o’clock. He fished Luncheon Meat and used a Blockend feeder. No information supplied on feeder bait and line & hook size. Andy had 11 Barbel, 2 Chub and 3 Dace; he had 1 fish in the first hour and 5 in each of the last 2 hours and lost 1.

ReplyDelete'I had a great day a few weeks back when the river was really up and coloured. I fished peg 1 and had in excess of 50lbs of Barbel all on the pellet in the side, the best fish was just over 10lbs, my first one over 10. Hopefully there will be more to follow in the months ahead'.

1st R Clayton Peg 10 22lbs 4ozs
He fished the near side at 1 o’clock half way down the swim. He used 10lb reel line with an 8lb hook length and a size 12 hook. He fished a cage feeder with halibut pellets and banded pellet hook bait. 4 Barbel were caught from the swim, 1 in each of the first 2 hours and 2 in the 3rd hour with nothing in the last 2 hours. 1 of his 4 Barbel turned out to be the biggest fish of the day at 7lbs 1oz. 1 other fish was lost.
2nd G Mason Peg 87 15lbs 3ozs
Gary fished the near side at 2 o’clock a quarter down the swim. His tackle was 8lb reel line; 6lb hook length and a No. 8 hook. Gary fished plain Luncheon meat throughout landing 3 Barbel all of which came in the 3rd and 4th hours of the match. No fish were lost.
3rd G Tarr Peg 71 12lbs 2ozs
Gary fished the near side at 12 o’clock a quarter down the swim. He used 10lb reel line; 8lb hook length with a No. 12 hook. Gary used a block end feeder and 10mm hair rigged Halibut pellets for hook bait. He caught 2 Barbel in the last hour of the match and lost 1 other fish.

John fished the near side at 3 o’clock half way down the swim. He fished with 8lb reel line a 7.9lb bottom and a No. 6 hook. His bait was spicy luncheon meat fished with a straight lead. He had 3 Barbel, 1 Chub and an Eel all caught in the first 4 hours.
Joint 2nd I Dickens Peg 101 13lbs 8ozs
Iveagh also fished the near side at 3 o’clock half way down the swim. He fished with 10lb reel line an 8lb bottom and a No. 10 hook. His bait was hair rigged plain luncheon meat fished on a straight lead. Iveagh had 2 Barbel and 1 Chub all caught in the second hour.
Joint 2nd P Edwards Peg 50 13lbs 8ozs
Pete fished the near side at 1 o’clock a quarter down the swim. He fished 10lb reel line with an 8lb bottom and a No. 12 hook. His bait was hair rigged luncheon meat. Pete had 2 Barbel both caught in the last hour.
4th J Sidaway Peg 75 12lbs 10ozs
John also fished the near side but at 1 o’clock half way down the swim. He fished 12lb reel line with a 10lb bottom and a No. 10 hook. His bait was Halibut pellets fished with a block end feeder with a 12mm hair rigged pellet on the hook. John had 2 Barbel one being the biggest fish of the day at 7lbs 10ozs both his fish were caught between 12 o’clock and 2 o’clock.

ReplyDeleteWith some spare time on my hands I thought it only proper that i finally got round to joining the "blog"!!
Being a pretty fresh member to RDAS and the river at Coalport you would think i wouldnt have much to say BUT as you get to know me you'll all see that one thing I do lots of and do well it rattle and lets be honest what better to talk about than the love we all share for our sport of fishing!! As I said i've been away from the river for sometime before joining Rowleys bunch of merry men, i'll be honest now i've loved every minute of the time i've spent on the river this year both in the matches and pleasure sessions. I've caught thousands of pounds of fish from commeriacal waters over the years on various methods and baits BUT its somehow not the same as catching those Severn Barbel of which this year i've caught many!! The best session i've had down at Coalport was a 4 hour afternoon in August it was warm and overcast and for once the river looked perfecccctttttttt! i'd wanted to fish peg 79 for some time as it also seemd to come up when talking about "the best pegs" on the streach, well having made my way down the access road I was shocked to see no cars parked at the access so afetr quickly unloading the car and almost braeking ones neck getting down to the river........there it was the informious peg 79!!! so i set about tackling up and making a plan in my head, i decided on two lines of attack the first being a pellet feeder down the middle at 1 o'clock and the second being a pellet feeder right over at about 3 o'clock. both rods were tackled up the same 8lb maxima to which I added a couple of korum grippa stops then a link swival followed by a korum buffer bead which was attached with a palamor (think thats the spelling) knot, a medium 40gram black attached to the snap link which just leaves the hook length my choice is simple and always the same 0.20m silstar which breaks at arould 7.9lb to which i mounted a korum S3 knottless knot style with a quick stop. Bait for the session was simple pellet pellet and errrrr pellet (to be continued)

ReplyDeleteso after 6 quick casts over to the far line to get some bait in I baits a hair with a single 8mm pellet and dropped it on the short line at mid river, I reached round for my flask and the rod was almost pulled in!!! Barbel on.....after a short sharpe battle a fin perfect Barbel of about 5lb landed in the landing net (what a start) I unhooked the fish a slipped her back re baited and cast agian paying a a nice bow so the feeder held bottom, i finished off the cuppa which had at this point gone cold and again the flask trick had worked as i was popping the cup back onto the flask the tip on my shakey mach 1 dropped back and you guessed it folks i was into Barbel number two. Afetr playing and returning a barbel of a simlar size to the first and re casting the tip sat motionless for around 20 minutes but all the time i was feeding 6mm pellets via a pult over my long line to try and build the swim for later, as i was filling the pouch i noticed a fish jump over on the far line a little down the peg but all the same in the area!!!! at seeing this I thought it was time for a change and time to attack the far line, as i lift the rod from the rest to bring it in it soon went solid and something started to move down stream this wasnt a Barbel it was fighting differently altogether after a few mintues a beautiful chub popped up it must have been close to 5lb if it was an oZ I was shocked to same the very least BUT was keen to swap rods and see what the far line had to offer. so I picked up my other rod and baited up the hair with a single 8mm Ambush pellet and cast it a couple of yards from the far bank just where i'd seen that fish jump well it took about 30 seconds and a fish had hooked itself against the weight of the feeder the fourth fish of the session and we are only just over an hour in!!!! Well let me tell you what happened for the next two hours was awesome I had 7 fish in each hour all from that far line all on pellet so added to the 4 fish caught in the first hour my total sat at 18 could it get any better than that? in truth i wasnt fussed but the last hour yeilded 3 more Barbel from the short line at mid river and also the biggest of the day at around 8lb, so it was 20 Barbel and a chub later with with sore arms i found myself almost running back up the bank towards the car like a young mountain goat. after packing the car i took 10 minutes to reflect on the afternoons events with a cuppa!! 21 fish in 4 hours and not a single item of lost tackle "what a day what a river"!!!! so folks there you go thats to date my best session of the River at Coalport BUT I hope many more well follow in the coming years. briefly i would like to thanks the senior members (note i didnt use the word old) for making me feel welcome at both the matches and the meetings "so thanks"

DeleteI'm also a devotee of peg 79 and have fished it quite a lot this summer. Its certainly a consistent producer of fish, though I've not managed more than eleven fish in a session there. However, I have, on a couple of occasions had both of my rods go at the same time, which is a bit worrying when they come in at £200 a touch. Fortunately though I managed both times to safely land the fish and return them, so no fish with stray hooks left in them, which is a relief.
ReplyDeleteI've managed to fish in seven or eight different pegs this year, mostly on recommendations from other anglers or the bailiff and to date the information I've received has been sound and of great value to me as a newcomer. The most pleasant aspect of this exchange of information is the enthusiasm with which it is offered. Never grudging and always in a spirit of friendship. Everyone I've encountered wants to help...its is the most refreshing and remarkable characteristic of life on the Severn at Coalport...if the place isn't beautiful enough to look at everyone you meet there has a smile on their face.
I still think that "A Duffers Guide to Winter and Summer Fishing at Coalport" would make a great title for a book. I've researched eight pegs in my first twelve months, so at this rate I should be ready to go into print in 2025 unless we can find a quicker way of pooling the collective knowledge for all to share. Any ideas feel free to shout up.

Iveagh fished the middle at 1 & 2 o'clock a quarter down the swim. He used 10lb reel line with an 8lb bottom and a size 12 hook. He used a block end feeder with hair rigged Halibut Pellet. Iveagh caught 2 Barbel in the 3rd & 4th hours of the match and did not loose any fish.
2nd G Jones Peg 63 8lbs 1oz
Geoff fished the near side at 2 o'clock a quarter down the swim. He also used 10lb reel line with an 8lb hook length but with a size 8 hook. Geoff used a block end feeder with hair rigged Spicy Luncheon Meat. He caught 2 Barbel both coming in the first 2 hours of the match and did not loose any fish.

1st A Mullett Peg 98 13lbs 6ozs
Alan fished the middle of the river at 1 o’clock. He fished 10lb reel line with an 8lb bottom and a No. 12 hook. Alan used a cage feeder and plain Luncheon meat. He caught 1 Barbel and 2Chub, 1 fish in each of the middle 3 hours of the match. Alan had the biggest fish of the match a Barbel of 6lbs 8ozs; he also lost 1 other fish.
2nd S Slade Peg 46 11lbs 11ozs
Steve fished the middle of the river at 2 o’clock half way down the swim. He fished 8lb reel line with a 6lb bottom and a No.6 hook. Steve used a cage feeder and bread to catch his 3 Chub having 2 in the second hour and 1 in the fourth hour.
